Photojournalism, people and society

“I am never alone in the story”

Who is really telling the story?

When I work documentarily, I am almost never alone in the story. I often have a correspondent beside me, someone I trust, but who also brings different knowledge and a different perspective.

I can read an image. I see light, body language, details and moments. But I cannot always understand all the historical, political and cultural layers of what I see.

The correspondent can see what I do not see. And I can see what the correspondent does not see.

It is in that meeting that the story comes into being. Many of the best journalistic assignments I have done have grown out of precisely that kind of collaboration, when two different perspectives together can tell something that neither of us could have told alone.

Fredrik Sjetne Larsson is a photojournalist and filmmaker with extensive experience of documentary storytelling and work in different parts of the world. Through photography and video, he portrays people, communities and events, often in close collaboration with correspondents and journalists. His work is built on curiosity, trust and a strong desire to understand the people and contexts behind the image.

Colour theory, studio lighting and off-camera flash Elinchrom

“BOLD COLOUR, BOLD BODIES”

In this practical and accessible seminar, Elinchrom ambassador James Musselwhite explores the fundamentals of colour theory, studio lighting and off-camera flash, providing a clear foundation that photographers of all levels can apply to their own work.

Beginning with an easy-to-understand introduction to colour theory, James will demonstrate how colour, light and harmony can be used to create portraits with greater impact, while supporting storytelling and visual narrative. He will then put these principles into practice using the latest Elinchrom equipment, artificial light, modifiers and gels, demonstrating how thoughtful lighting choices can transform a portrait and help develop a distinctive visual style.

The seminar will be highly interactive. Delegates with cameras will have the opportunity to experiment with the lighting equipment, and ask questions throughout the session. Rather than simply watching a demonstration, you’ll be encouraged to explore the techniques for yourself and see how they can be adapted to your own photography.

Whether you are new to off-camera flash or looking to gain greater control and creativity from your lighting, you’ll leave with practical foundations in both colour and artificial light showcasing ideas you can put into practice immediately to create portraits that stand out.

James is a portrait photographer based in Portsmouth, UK. His studio facilitates a range of high end, award winning shoots that create dynamic, stylised portraits with impact. Primarily responsible for the series A Portrait of a Wrestler, James specialises in photographing the very best international talent of the pro wrestling scene globally. James was featured by Canon in a documentary short, highlighting his journey into the pro wrestling scene and he has won many awards both in the UK and internationally for his portraiture, including International Photographer of the Year in 2021.
